Now that every show has had a few episodes to strut its stuff, it’s time to tell you what we’ll be blogging this season. This is Random Curiosity’s Summer 2016 blogging schedule.

As always, this is a tentative overview of our plans for the new season . . . is what we used to say, but with 2-3 episodes under our belts, we’re pretty confident in our picks. Will some of them blow up in our faces? Probably. But this is what we’re going with.

Fall 2023 Preview

You know fall is here when the days grow shorter, the mornings cooler, school starts up, and anime, well, comes on in force. And oh boy is it here in force. As if a sign to show why you never mess with fall anime no fewer than 58 (!) shows populate this season, with everything from tried and true fan favourites to hotly anticipated adaptations and even some very intriguing originals guaranteed to make their mark. If the return of multi-season titans in Dr. STONE, Tokyo Revengers, and SPY x FAMILY aren’t enough to keep the hype train going, continuations to Goblin Slayer, Shield Hero, and Eminence in Shadow should more than do the trick. Need some adrenaline-fuelled pulp action to whet the appetite? Best be sure Dead Mount Death Play’s second half, Yoko Taro’s anime original battle royale KamiErabi, or the fantasy flavoured chaos of Ragna Crimson will more than meet the needs. Like things more on the down low? Give the eagerly awaited Sousou no Frieren a whirl, look into the manhua adaptation fun of Kikansha no Mahou wa Tokubetsu desu, or take a peek at the truly unknown OVERTAKE and Megumi no Daigo: Kyuukoku no Orange. And if that still isn’t enough, there’s always the harem hilarity of Kimi no Koto ga Daidaidaidaidaisuki na 100-nin no Kanojo, the dramatic historical Kusuriya no Hitorigoto, or the always pleasant countryside adventures in Mahoutsukai no Yome to round matters out.

Fall might herald the beginning of winter for many, but when it comes to anime it could easily be a season for the ages. This is Random Curiosity’s Fall 2023 Preview!

Summer 2020 Preview!

Summer is usually a hot season for anime (ha ha ha), and this season is no different. There are some big names on them thar lists. What’s different is that some of them, we’ve seen before. And I’m not just talking about sequels. Yes, as long as Corona-chan continues running apace, even our wacky and weird world of anime is affected. Bugger! But fortunately, the studios and their intrepid staff creators have been hard at work delivering as much animated goodness as shutdowns and illnesses allow. Speaking of sequels, we’ve got a few of them this season, including a surprise second season of old school-style shounen Muhyo to Roujii no Mahouritsu Soudan Jimusho 2nd Season, more fire force action in Enen no Shouboutai: Ni no Shou, and second tries at Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu 2nd Season, Yahari Ore no Seishun Love Comedy wa Machigatteiru. Kan, and Sword Art Online: Alicization – War of Underworld 2nd Season (may their airings go better than things usually go for Subaru). There are a few fresh adaptations too, such as this season’s Korean manhwa production The God of High School (get hype), this season’s possible romantic trainwreck in Kanojo, Okarishimasu, and the great snaggletoothed smugening with Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai!. There’s also a pleasantly plump roster of originals, such as the big budget glitzy international romp GREAT PRETENDER (leverage that Netflix money yo), the post-apocalytpic survival horror Edo time travel crossover Gibiate, and the mecha one in Deca-Dence. There has never been a better time to stay inside and watch anime. This is Random Curiosity’s Summer 2020 Preview.

Winter 2020 Preview!

As the decade comes to a close—a statement I lead with primarily to annoy the pedants among us, who will insist that the decade actually ends on Dec 31, 2020 … Hi, Passerby! (proofreader’s note: I love you, boss)—it’s a time to reflect back on not only the year that has passed, but the entire decade. But not here! Here we focus on the marvellously shiny future, where the anime is fresh and all our problems go away. At least if those problems involve a lack of new anime. So what do we have in store? Several popular franchises are making their returns, including the hot-blooded volleyball action of Haikyuu!!: To the Top, the scientific(?) action of Toaru Kagaku no Railgun T, the silliest isekai around in Isekai Quartet 2, and the five sisters love-melee of Go-toubun no Hanayome 2nd Season. There’s even a spin-off of the there’s-nothing-but-frills-and-despair Madoka franchise in Magia Record: Mahou Shoujo Madoka Magica Gaiden. There are a ton of excellent adaptations as well, including the uber-stylish anime-making adventure of Eizouken ni wa Te wo Dasu na!, a beautiful stroll through a ruined world in Somali to Mori no Kamisama, a shounen fashion anime in Runway de Waratte, and a dark horse you should pay attention to in Jibaku Shounen Hanako-kun. There are even a few originals, such as the anime world’s re-introduction to rugby in number24 and the fascinating sci-fi mystery of ID:INVADED. Let’s ring in the new year with a fresh batch of anime! This is Random Curiosity’s Winter 2020 Preview.

The Best of Anime 2016

Now that 2016 is officially over, it’s time for our yearly foray into annoying everyone with our questionable opinions, the Best of Anime 2016 post! As with last year, this post is a collaboration between the writers who watched the most series this year, me (Zephyr) and Samu. Through hiatuses and other real-life obligations, we both still managed to watch approximately 100 series this year, making us somewhat informed about whatever we’re wrong about.

Disclaimer: As always, disclaimers abound. Please keep in mind that “best” is subjective. What’s best for us isn’t necessarily best for you, and that’s perfectly fine. This list shouldn’t be taken as some kind of inviolable truth, but rather the opinions of two guys who had too much time on their hands and spent it conjuring up a list of picks based on all the anime they watched. Naturally, our choices will be influenced by our own tastes, experiences, and personal impressions, and ultimately these are just recommendations of series we feel most people will enjoy, nothing more. Before you go bashing one of our choices, please make sure you’ve at least given the series a chance so you may know where we’re coming from. Aside from that, we ask that you respect our opinions and the opinions of others in the comments, just like we respect yours. Thank you.

Disclaimer #2: The choices in this post are not reflective of the opinions of all Random Curiosity writers. They are solely the opinions of myself (Zephyr) and Samu, save for where otherwise noted. Thank you for your understanding.

More after the jump…

Summer 2016 Preview!

Summer is in the air, and it’s a time of change. Or at least it is for some people. You know what’s not changing? Anime, and the previewing thereof. We’ve got some big-name shows returning with sequels, including the cooking battle mega-hit Shokugeki no Souma, the sword-and-horses warfare of Arslan Senki, and the by-now-traditional new season of Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya. Not to be left out, several popular properties are getting their first shot at adaptation, including the breathlessly awaited drama orange, a science trip back to high school with ReLife, the next big Key visual novel adaptation in Rewrite, and not one but two DANGANRONPA series. A few popular authors are getting anime for their newer works, including a healing/diving anime from the ARIA author, Amanchu!, and the next offering from One-Punch Man’s author in Mob Psycho 100. Sports anime fans will be especially pleased with Battery and DAYS on the docket, and though original series are thin on the ground this summer, at least the Prohibition-era thriller 91Days and the new era of school idols in Love Live! Sunshine!! are looking promising. No, that’s not sweat you’re dripping with, it’s anticipation for these new anime. This is Random Curiosity’s Summer 2016 Preview.
