Viral has returned to get his helmet back, but first he tells everyone to put some clothes on. Once they get dressed, Simon and Kamina take on Viral, and during the fight, Viral reveals that there is a capital governed by someone known as the Spiral King. The Gurren Lagann manages to crush the Enki’s swords once again, but this time Viral has the power of the capital backing him up in the form of a large artillery shell fired from far away. Soon, a huge object appears in the distance moving towards them. It continues to fire and approach, all while Viral detaches a large blade from Enki’s body and attacks again. When the large object gets there, Viral introduces it as the mobile fortress Ganmen: Daiganzan. Leeron quickly realizes that this Ganmen is the return point that they’ve been looking for, and Kamina’s ready to take it on despite everyone else thinking that they should run away. The beastman controlling the Daiganzan is one of the four generals under the Spiral King, and he proceeds to shell the Gurren Lagann from point blank range. Despite Yoko’s pleas to run away, Kamina doesn’t give up.

Even when the Gurren Lagann’s left leg gets damaged, Kamina still refuses to back down, and his determination powers up the Gurren Lagann to self-repair. Since he can’t reach the top of the Daiganzan by itself, Kamina uses the explosions from the enemy fire to propel the Gurren Lagann upward until he can make a flaming kick at the Enki on the Daiganzan’s surface. The others, who were watching the battle from a distance, now get involved in the fight because the Daiganzan launches three Ganmen at them. Fortunately, they are saved by the appearance of a new Ganmen who lands on one Ganmen and gets the other two to destroy themselves. This new Ganmen turns out to be piloted by none other than Kittan, the brother of Kiyoh, Kinon, and Kiyal. While this is going on, Kamina confronts Thymilph, the commander of the Daiganzan and one of the four generals under the Spiral King. Kamina introduces himself and the jumps up towards Thymilph, but Thymilph has the Daiganzan grab the Gurren Lagann with its large arms and smack it around. It then takes the Gurren Lagann and attempts to pull its legs apart. Luckily, Kamina and Simon are saved by weapons fire from another friendly Ganmen, this one piloted by Dayakka. It seems that everyone has been following Kamina’s example and have been stealing their own Ganmen.

When Thymilph decides to turn his attention to taking care of the Gurren Lagann first, Yoko calls Kamina to make him understand that he’s integral in keeping everyone together. Kamina still refuses to run away, and the Gurren Lagann soon gets knocked off the Daiganzan. Things finally turn around when Kamina says that they can’t win as long as the Daiganzan’s legs keep moving. This gives Simon an idea, so he has Kamina give him control of the Gurren Lagann. Simon proceeds to use the Gurren Lagann’s speed to avoid the enemy shells and then shoots drills around the Daiganzan. With a ring of these drills surrounding the huge Ganmen, Simon only has to attack into the ground to crumble the earth under the Daiganzan. Viral promises to be back tomorrow, but for now, the Gurren Lagann has won thanks to Simon. That night, Kamina’s group sets up camp with their small army of new allies, each with their own Ganmen. While Leeron gets to work on the Gurren because the leg damage returned as soon as it separated with the Lagann, Dayakka explains that the Gurren Lagann is a symbol of hope for mankind now.

After Kamina gives a fiery speech to his new allies to get them excited for the impending fight tomorrow, Leeron explains that the Gurren-Lagann’s combination completes when Lagann takes control of Gurren’s system. Using this same logic, they could try to capture the Daiganzan by combining the Lagann with it, though it will depend on Simon’s fighting spirit. Yoko meanwhile goes out to see Kamina who is admiring the moon in the clear sky. He feels that they have to keep fighting and win for the sake of kids like Simon living without worries. Yoko respects Kamina for saying this, but she also warns him not to repeat the reckless things he did today. He would have died today if it weren’t for Simon, and that made Yoko really scared. After a long pause, Yoko seems ready to say something else to him, but they get interrupted when a distant mountain erupts in flames.

I’m speechless yet again. I don’t know how they do it, but the show was stuck on “insane” mode this entire episode. There were explosions and cool moves being thrown left and right, and I was quite impressed by the animation quality. And now Kamina has his own army of allies with their own Ganmen, so I imagine the battles will only get bigger from here. Heck, they even want to take over the enemy mobile fortress, which would become a base of their own.
Maybe this is wishful thinking on my part, but it seems to me like Yoko was getting ready to maybe confess her feelings to Kamina before that mountain erupted in flames to interrupt her. They’d make a good couple. Actually, the believe speech that Kamina gives Simon in the preview makes me think that there’s a chance Kamina might die next week, though it might just be a motivational speech for Simon to capture the Daiganzan. In any case, I can’t wait to see it since the preview shows even more action coming our way.

  1. Points!!
    – Shimon is totally a different person this episode. He just solo the big boss.
    – They also introduced a bunch of new crews at once.. I am surprised….
    – As a lot of you have guessed, Shimon’s Lagann has power to combine. They are planning to have him combine with the battle ship.
    – Its not Gurren dan, its Dai-Gurren dan!!
    – Yoko is definitely going for Kamina…. aww don’t die on me now Kamina
and most of all…Kamina might be kicking the bucket next episode already wth!? Nooooo

    Translation of Preview:
    Kamina: (in a quiet voice)
    ok? Shimon… Don’t forget this.
Believe in yourself. Not in me, who believe in you.
Not in you who believe in me. Believe in yourself.
    Do Believe in yourself!

    Don’t die Kamina >_

  2. Gurren Lagann’s version of Inazuma Kick is awesome as it should be.

The thing about Kamina is, he’ll died to protect Simon, that’s how manly he is. He will be a meatshield for his partner if necessary. While I hope it doesn’t happen, you know that he’ll definitely do it if the situation calls for it.

The sad thing is, last episode, Kamina told us his future goals, and that is to go to the moon. And we all know what happens when a character tells their friend about a future goal.

*points to Nichol in Gundam SEED*

  3. but come on.. the first episode thing: NOONE else is there too!
Yoko wasn’t there, so does Rosuoi and others members. (the guy standing next to supposely grown up Shimon is Boota).

    Kamina can’t die this early~

    Show Spoiler ▼

  4. Viral will get curbstomped by Kamina beforehand if Kamina’s gonna bite it.

Thinking about it more, it’s very possible that GAINAX will hurt us like this. I mean, it’s GAINAX.

    Show Spoiler ▼

  5. Quina: Show Spoiler ▼

I’m just worried–it’s GAINAX, and as one of those stereotypically jaded anime fans, I’m pessimistic. Of course, it’s all just speculation and I’m sure things will be just fine.

  6. Show Spoiler ▼

Of course, I’m hoping that it doesn’t happen. To Kamina, that is.

  7. Woot if Simon really turns out to be that guy in the first episode I’ll be overjoyed (hah he WILL get much taller xD) but i don’t think that the guy in the rounded orange shades is Kamina TvT he just doesn’t have the aura. Kamina don’t die!

  8. Umm Kamina is not going to die. . .Didnt you remember the first like ten seconds of the first episode? Show Spoiler ▼

  9. @iiii,
The first 10 sec there is not Kamina btw. Different voice actor pretty much confirm that.
He is speculated to be Shimon grown up. And the guy besides him is Boota grown up beastman.
No other crews are seen in the OP, they probably stay somewhere, if not well… end up dead.

  10. Omni and other people mentioned Kamina might die.

I think that will happen, and that the guy in the beginning of the very first episode was actually Simon who has adopted Kamina’s spirit and personality to fight the villains.

    White Star
  11. Based on what I remember from the first episode, I think we can be fairly certain they capture that gigantic base, because something like it was shown as part of the ship…

  12. Wait, so if it’s split into four acts, does this mean the possibility of a new/updated OP every 6-8 episodes? XD

Wishful thinking, but hey, with the production values of this show…
