“She’s being nice to me. Am I terminally ill!?”

“There’s No Way My Sister’s Life Counseling Ends Here”

After the previous episode set things up for a conclusion with an improved sibling relationship, this television finale did just that with a little bit of a twist at the end. Leading up to that, it looked like we were possibly in for something more profound when Kirino started acting nicely towards Kyousuke, until the humor that this series is known for quickly took over. This means that there were no potential tearjerker moment like last time, as the writers went all out with the homo jokes to some pretty hilarious results. In doing so, it befittingly gave off the same vibe as the start of this series. All’s well that ends well… is what I would’ve liked to say, except there isn’t much indication that too much has changed over the course of the season.

Kirino’s awfully nice to everyone, including Kanako who’s already working on a signature for herself.

There’s no “see you next time” from Ayase, as she gives Kyousuke a stiff “Farewell, sleazebag!”

In reality, some things look like they’ll never change, such as Ayase’s disgust of Kyousuke even though she’s willing to put up with him for Kirino’s sake. After episode ten, I did start opening up to her abusive tendencies, so it was nice to see her have some part in this finale. I probably laughed much more than I should have when Kyousuke’s “mata na” was met with a firm “sayonara”. Kyousuke’s reaction to her goodbye said it all.

Speak of the devil. Look who comes knocking right after Kyousuke gets off the phone with Saori.

Kirino’s begging him to line up for a midnight release of an eroge, but all I took notice to was the fact that she was asking him nicely.

Kirino’s not allowed to put on a face like that. That’s illegal!
Time sure flies by quickly, as the series is already at April 2012.

In all honesty, I saw the last life consultation as an opportunity to really surprise us with some sort of finish, so it came as a bit of a disappointment when Kirino fumbled around with the idea of telling Kyousuke that she’d be leaving for America for track and field and instead asked him to line up at midnight to buy a bunch of new eroge for her. I realize this shows the dishonest side of Kirino and her inability to properly convey her feelings, but I’ve already had eleven episodes of that and was expecting something more. She even got down on her knees and begged him, which meant she probably could have asked Kyousuke for almost anything and he would have reluctantly agreed. There’s no way he’d be able to say no to a face like this.

The secret pact is made. We were never here lining up at midnight to buy porn!

Odds that Kyousuke is a homophobe: High.
It looks like a spin-off about Akagi and his sister is in order.

“I’m helplessly in love with homos!”
Luckily, everyone overheard their entire conversation and not just the part he yelled out.

And here it is, the undisputed hilarious moment of the episode courtesy of Akagi, who hasn’t even had that much screen time all series. Between having a sister into little sisters and one into yaoi, I’m starting to think that Kyousuke doesn’t have it that badly anymore. I still wouldn’t mind seeing a spin-off about Akagi though, especially considering that he’s voiced by Majima Junji who starred in Toradora. Watching Kyousuke flip out when he thought Kouhei was gay was great stuff, as was his instant turnaround once he realized that he’s found someone in the exact same situation as him. It almost made me wish this was revealed earlier so that I could have seen the two of them share in their woes of having a younger sister who’s into eroge and bosses them around. These two would’ve hit it off almost instantly, much like when they agreed to never speak of this night again.

There were some decent looking girls lining up. Midnight preorders: The new way of meeting people!

I’m not sure what Kuroneko was implying when she said she’ll be call Kyousuke something else before long, but “anata” came to mind. Oh snap!

“Do you have the stuff?”
It may as well have been a drug drop-off with that suspicious look on Kyousuke’s face.

Cute sister or not, it doesn’t feel right playing eroge with ANYONE. That’s like saying, “Hey, do you want to watch the latest porno together?”

They sure love playing up the fan-service from Kirino’s tush. Meanwhile, Kyousuke was probably thinking, “Please don’t be a vibrator. For the love of god please don’t be a vibrator.”

“Do you really want to see?”
That’s one suggestive look on Kirino’s face just asking for a misunderstanding.

It may have scarred him for life, but it’s probably safe to say that the damage has already been done.

Childhood pictures are cheating! A younger Kirino competing in track looks awfully cute.

Kirino wanted him to stop her from leaving for America, but Kyousuke proves that he’s not that much of a siscon.

“Wait… my kidney!”

It was a touching moment, but it was also Hanazawa Kana voice I was hearing. Kuroneko’s voice speaking Kirino’s mind? Now where have I seen that before?

“Kirino headbutt!” “Oh shi–“

Considering how Kirino’s departure for America came completely out of the blue, it was kind of hard to really get caught up in the emotional aspect of it. Still, the revelation did shed light on why she’s been acting so nicely to Kyousuke and how she was hoping for some sort of a reaction for him. The notebook falling over and playing out the scene that Kirino was longing for did present a very interesting predicament and one I wasn’t completely sure how Kyousuke would handle. While he ultimately chose the “arguably” respectful route of maintaining a normal sibling relationship, that scene reiterated why Kirino’s so obsessed with eroge about younger sisters to begin with. Namely, she’s been longing for Kyousuke to treat her like the player treats the girls in those game, short of the actual adult scenes. However, the fact that they’re still eroge leads to a lot of misunderstandings, giving us the awesome series that we have here.

That’s one heck of a stare. It may have pierced Kyousuke’s very soul knowing that he’s a big reason why she decided to stay.

Finally, some of the dishonesty is easy to read for Kyousuke.

Throw in a “baka” of Ayase proportions to seal the deal. Don’t count Manami out just yet though.

“There’s no way my sister would settle for such a normal ending.”

As for the “Good End” as a whole, I’m much more content with it knowing that there’s more on the way. While Kirino did play up a sweeter side to her character, the whole studying abroad bit felt a little tacked on at the end and overshadowed what I was really curious about — the contents of the photo album. Picking up hints from the build-up, I was convinced that the even more embarrassing thing Kirino hadn’t shown Kyousuke yet would be childhood photos of them together that she cherishes. It would’ve worked much better in giving the impression that the two of them have a renewed sibling relationship and build on the thank you party last time. Saying I was disappointed when the episode ended without ever opening the photo album would be an understatement, although I did like how the eroge sequence was triggered and spoke the words that Kirino couldn’t.

I’m still a bit torn over as to whether Kyousuke should have used that as a cue to really win Kirino over, or simply retain the love-hate relationship that they currently have by telling her to go to America like he did. As someone who doesn’t particularly care for a potential incestuous ending, the former would have served admirably as a “True End” in my books. Going against that, Kyousuke’s logical decision not to completely spoil her with the reaction she was hoping for was actually nice in its own way, since it showed that they had grown closer but not that close. All I wanted was visual proof from Kirino loves her brother as much as she’s suggested (in the normal kind of way), which that photo album would’ve cemented. Because of that , this fell a bit short of being a truly good ending, but it wasn’t a terribly way of going about it even if this were the only ending.

Surprise cuteness attack by Kuroneko at the very end? *gulp*

It looks like Kyousuke isn’t as eager to get out of the counseling thing as he let off.

Final Impressions:

With the four-episode “True End” slated to be streamed at some point, it’s probably a bit premature to give some final impressions on the series, but there are still a few things that I can reflect upon in the meantime. The first of which is my surprise over how popular this series turned out to be. The reason I say that is because I watch and cover a lot of comedies that have a lot of the same appeal, yet none of them really tend to pick up the same kind of steam as this one.

While Oriemo deserves all the credit in the world for doing all the little things well and keeping everyone watching even if they found Kirino’s character hard to like, AIC adapted a very good series last fall that does the same and has a second season slated too — Nyan Koi. Kannagi would be another one that comes to mind, and comes with Hanazawa Kana in her role as Zange-chan, who isn’t quite like Kuroneko but has a similar charm to her since she’s always at odds with the female lead. If you’re okay with something that plays up the perverted humor more and is less constricted to realism (short of a middle school girl obsessed with eroge), this season’s continuation of Sora no Otoshimono also provides a similar level of enjoyment, as did Kampfer a year ago. There’s also the sleeper Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls, that deserves special praise with the way it combines high school comedy in a fictional feudal future and makes it work really well with a plot that progresses steadily along. Looking back, I enjoyed this series just as much as the next person, but I also happened to enjoy the aforementioned ones just as much. In fact, I was completely sold on this premise back in Fall 2010 Preview because I was anticipating something similar and that’s exactly what I ended up getting.

Until I figure otherwise, I’m almost inclined to believe that the selling power of a bratty, unappreciative 14 year-old little sister is more “fearsome” than it appears. While I like Kyousuke’s character, he doesn’t fall far from the tree of weak male leads who only show a moment or two of assertiveness over the entire course of a series, which seems to be a common complaint of a lot of anime viewer these days. As such, I’m curious as to whether or not a lot of the actual interest stems from viewers who have a younger sister and can relate to Kyousuke in some way, even if it’s not within the realm of a fashion model sister who’s into eroge. Quite frankly, I have a bit of a hard time believing that Kirino’s 110% “tsun” side portrayed by Taketatsu Ayana was the highlight of this series, seeing as she provided the same thing in MM this very season with a lot more of the “dere” side. Granted, that series’ premise is completely different with a masochistic male lead, but it does seem to suggest that it’s the complete, little sister package that gave this one its edge. Support characters like Kuroneko, Saori, Ayase, Kanako, and of course Manami really brought everything together and provided several options for other characters to like if Kirino just didn’t do it for you.

As usual, AIC’s animation continues to impress as they and all their subdivisions are one of my favorite studios since last year, and ClariS “irony” theme was one of the catchiest opening themes this year, earning it a spot on my shortlist for favorite song of the year. Is the series worthy of claiming tops of the year? It’s hard to say with some of the competition out there this past year, but it sure makes a case for itself as far as comedies go. It’s definitely a step in the right direction when something of this genre can contend with the more plot-heavy series that most people tend to consider first.

  1. Well, the Good End was almost too… Good? It just didn’t feel right for me. Sure I enjoyed seeing Kirino’s nicer side, but she seemed a bit too nice, in the first half and the second half was a bit too angsty. Anyhow, OreImo was surely the most enjoyable show this season. I’m really really sad to see this show end. There will be a second season, even after the BD episodes, right?

  2. Highly doubt she’d bother being nice to him even if he was terminally ill, oh new plot idea there…

Kyousuke’s relatability comes from older siblings with any bratty younger sibling like Kirino, so yes to that point of interest.
As a brother, he’s overly fabulous; character-wise, he could use a little more spine…

  3. I loved this series for all that it was, but now that its over (until the “true ending” anyways) I feel it was a bit rushed.
Perhaps rushed is not the right word; With such a great cast, characters, and interesting story, I wish this series ran a little longer than the standard 12 episode run- especially considering all the awesome Kuroneko, Saori, and Manami development that could have been 🙁
Too bad Ore Imou isn’t following the amagami omnibus format lol.
Despite the few minor gripes, this was definitely one of my favorite shows this season, and I’m looking forward to the “True End”.

Also the Vonfan end card is Epic!

  4. Poor Kirino. Can’t help but feel a little sorry for her. She spent all that time trying to get Kyousuke to get her to stay, even getting him to wait/play it with her and he still shoved her off.

Kuroneko for one of my favourite characters of the year forrrrrrrrrr sure. Great series, thanks for blogging it Divine!

I think for the next four or three episodes, the production spoke that one of the episodes will be a rewriting of the history of this episode:

  6. This was definitely much better than what I expected when I first saw the anime announcement many months ago. (When I was thinking “another otaku pandering piece of ****”)
In the end the “otaku pandering” turned out to be a pretty accurate assessment, but at least OreImo does it in the “this could be me” way. And I may just have turned out like Akagi’s little sister if I had an older brother, lived in Japan, didn’t have access to this giant porn-stash known as the internet etc.

@Divine, I haven’t seen the other titles you mentioned but I think for me (and maybe quite a few other female viewers as well) the main thing that sets this apart is the restraint on the fanservice (Kirino only had one panty shot and one shower scene if I recall correctly…) meaning that more of the story is dedicated to other forms of comedic scenes.

Anyway, looking forward to the 3 episodes true end, though I’m not really sure I’m ready for incest at the moment (purely based on the character developments).

  7. I believe what Kuroneko was refering to when she said she would be calling Kyousuke something different was “senpai” as she will be going to the same school as him during the new school year.

  8. Divine, I’m glad you’re among those who liked the series, even at this point. I’ve read blog posts and comments that show the opposite and make me do a facepalm.

Also laughed at Kuroneko dancing. When that picture was posted on Twitter, I immediately retweeted it.

  9. Kuroneko you’re mine!!! Oh my gosh… why are the ones with dark hair so much more appealing, adorable, and better than the other main characters? Kuroneko is up there, on my list, with Kampfer’s Shizuku ahaha. <3

  10. This show was decent and had alot more positives then negatives. I’d say it was about average and if you list the best new animes of this season it will be in the middle of the pack. It was ridiculous to bring the “going to america to learn track & field” out of no where when they have not given a single indication that she is some athletic superstar in the making. The brother was spineless and the sister was spoiled and mean. The side characters were what made this series for me to balance off the 2 crappy main characters.

The best of this seasons first year animes would of course be: Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Girls, Otome Yokai Zakuro, Shinryaku Ika Musume, Soredemo Machi Wa Mawaheiru, and Bakuman.

  12. Well, that’s a Visual Novel “Good End” for you – Fairly satisfactory, ties up most loose ends, but still leaves you feeling something is amiss.

As Quen from Sankaku Complex puts it:
Were this actually an eroge, this would be the sort of ending received after generally being nice to all of the girls, but never seriously following just one or two’s path in particular – thus earning an ending that doesn’t actually leave the protagonist with anyone.

Don’t you worry about Akagi, Divine, the novel subsequently covers more of him and his fujoshi sister as well, so the fun is sure to continue.

Seeing how this episode has decided to deviate from the novel, it’s a safe bet to say that the True End will follow the novel all the way now.

  13. This episode was quite swaying for me. Either i will grade this 9 or 10. but it seems that this good ending thing was good that i open a chance for next season which makes me happy.
In the beginning i really laughed and imagining how kyousuke would think “hey am i dreaming”. also i loled hard at “Love homo scene” and also the Sayonara thing that ayase did.
In the ended even though Kuroneko had few lines(even though her seiyuu also voiced the girl from the novel), she still won for me in the end with here cat poses.
well if this is the end of the series i would give still it a thumbs up story wise, rom comedy and animation even though it didnt follow the some parts of the novel.

    Croosboy
    1. Was more like a 6 or 7. You gotta admit pulling that “track and field” move to America out of their asses was lame. After 11 episodes with no real mention of her being an athletic prodigy all of a sudden… They could have come up with a better plot device then that.

Plus the sister is an unlikeable spoiled bully character and the brother a good brother but way way way too wimpy. Lets himself get his ass whipped by his little sister and even got knocked the F–k Out! The saving grace to this series was the memorable side characters.

      Karmafan
  14. There were some decent looking girls lining up.

Decent looking fujoshis that applauded Akagi’s “confession” to Kyousuke, I must add. I personally am fine with them, though I don’t know how many of you straight guys here would stomach their taste in that direction. 🙂

Odds that Kyousuke is a homophobe: High.

Now to be fair to Kyousuke, any straight guy, be he homophobic or not, would freak out if some male were to suddenly become very affectionate to him. I bet you would’ve cut him more slack if he had learned from Seinfeld and added: “Not that there’s anything wrong with that.”

  15. I’m just glad this series paid off in the end. Kirino was perhaps the most unlikeable lead I’ve ever experienced….but she managed to redeem herself in the last 2 episodes. At least I can feel like my time was not wasted, but this will never be a favorite. Now if Kuroneko was to get her own series….that might be a force to be reckoned with.

Hey look, it’s the embarassing scene Kuroneko revealed back in volume 1. One of the things Saori had the group do to break the ice when they first met at Akihabara was talk about a moment that frightened them. Kuroneko’s moment was being caught by her siblings while she was recording herself caramelldansen’ing while wearing nekomimi + tail. xD

Anime original good end feels kind of forced. Lovely seeing Kirino like that again. I’m hoping the True End is the novel volume 5 equivalent, with a season 2 announce. 🙂

  17. I don’t know if Divine was trolling, but I want express my disappointment about this post.

First, Kyousuke did the best he could do. He wasn’t be pussy, he only try to emend his sins. To put it simple, he never was a lovely brother, because he never fit that role. with a sister far superb, the only thing that he could do was be another “fan” of Kirino, tolerate all the comparisons and recriminations about his lack of talent. (She don’t necessitate it, I don’t give that), but when he view that she needed a person the she can rely, he did everything that she commanded, because he understand that part of his role of brother never was full filled with anyone.

But, if you only spend a little time with your sister, (6 months?) and abruptly she left, and let you alone with your pride seriously damaged, the sentiment is the same that when a beautiful girl ordered you make some funniest traits and left you when her schedule dictate that, in other words, she play with you.

I know that a brother ever can do the best for his sisters, but, If you don’t feel that you has be tricked, you dont’ have heart. This chapter was painful if you see the future of the “true ending”.

sorry, my english is terrible, but i hope that next year i can comment properly.

  18. Kuroneko in front of the mirror > Kirino. Cannot resist. Enjoyed watching Oreimo throughout, except for Kirino’s 180 change last episode, just felt way too unnatural. Thanks for all your blogging Divine! You had quite a workload near the end of this season…

  19. That was supposed to be the good end? What’s so great about getting beat up and the bitch ends up staying? Yes she is still a bitch.

I guess what I find really frustrating was with the way this anime is marketed I’m assuming (to otakus) and the protagonist is usually supposed to be an extension of the viewer. So when the protagonist doesn’t act like the viewer would want them to act, not even in the slightest, it’s very hard to enjoy.

Anyways I’m still looking forward to the true end.

  20. Yep. Like some ppl have been saying. There will be a true ending with 4 more episodes

    http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/news/2010-12-05/oreimo-lists-4-unaired-episodes

As the light novel. The episode 12 was exactly as the light novel however kirino actually goes to America so the new episode 12 might be the same but with Kirino going to America with that ending the light novel 4.

You can find the light novel summaries right here:

  21. I really can’t say too much about this series. It was boring to say the least but maybe that’s because I grew up with 5 younger sisters & a wimpy-ass younger brother 😛 Needless to say, I really don’t get why so many can get into bro-sis realations (lying). The way it ended seemed like it was cut-off, like someone took a knife to the script. Kirino seriously needs to come over here and learn some damn manners. However I’ll put most of that shit on Kyousuke in a second. If my sisters acted like that toward me, I would kick my own ass.

    1. People with younger/older sisters (me included) do realize how impossible such relationships usually are, but well, this IS an anime. No point fussing over so many things, just sit back, relax, and enjoy the anime/novel/manga the way it is =D

      Kaiser
      1. I did say I was (lying), & those relationships aren’t so impossible. I’m just glad I wasn’t subject to any. That other part was merely hitting the wimpy-ass male lead chord that has been in vogue for the last 20 years…

  22. You know, i’m also still surprised on how popular this series came to be. After reading the light novels, I would have never thought this to be one of the series to catch alot of attention.

But about the actual ending, it was…well a good ending. Nothing too special to write home about. I had a hint feeling that the “Kirino going to America” would pop up in this episode and then the series ends with a cliffhanger. And thus that would lead us to the to the “True end” OVAS.

I just wish that this would have been a 24 episode series to finish it off. AIC has some REALLY good material to work with right now. Can’t really blame AIC since they were working on Amagami at the same time as this. But now I will eagerly await what they will bring us in the upcoming “True end” episodes. Maybe even they’ll throw in a surprise second season promo.

  23. I’m still wondering why Kirino disliked Kyousuke in the first place. I was hoping something in the photo album would show why they became separated over the years. I remember earlier in the series, Kirino mentioned something about Kyousuke not always being there or was never there (something along those lines). He seems like a good brother now, I wonder what he did to be a “bad brother” when they were younger.

    1. You might read the Light Novels or at least the summaries that i’ve been posting above.

      http://seanver.com/2010/08/24/index-of-my-ore-no-imouto-ga-konna-ni-kawaii-wake-ga-nai-summaries/

      Giving some split facts:

      1. At the very beginning she just treat him as a normal brother. Put in her shoes. You never speak with that person and it might become annoying just seen him. It’s the same for both not just kirino.

      2. On the other side the author classify the genre of this work as “comedy” engulfing kirino in some kind of Tsun against his brother. Besides Kirino on the anime itself just said something [that i forgot lol]. But when she complain before make up with ayase about his brother never been with her so how he could now understand her. Besides it cost a lot to her to shown her dere side even more because there’s a reason behind which explode at the end of volume 5 [sorry but don’t want to provide spoiler]

      3. Nothing else. Read the Volume 4 which is the episode 12 then the 5, 6 and 7 [ 6 – 7 My favs one]. There you’ll understand everything behind kirino actions 😛

      Grand Cross
  24. The ending was exactly what it was, a good end. It didn’t make me long for more, yet it didn’t make me go “aw man, I wasted all my time on this”. It satisfied me which is a lot more than I can say about a lot of series.

I do like that Kyousuke told her to go, instead of going with the simple answer that she wanted. While what Kirino wanted was the answer her heart wanted, as a brother, that would’ve been the wrong answer for Kyousuke to give. Even as a lover-brother it still wrong, because it would be stopping Kirino from doing one of the things that she loves to do, which is track.

The biggest reason a lot of people like this, I think, is because they do have a sister of this nature. I am one of those folks and I could easily put myself in Kyousuke’s shoes. Though, at least he didn’t get stabbed or hit with a frying pan…

Still though, that was the main appeal for me, was the fact that it made me think about my own trials with my younger sister and how foolish things are. There were quite a few instances that I went “oh hey, that reminds me of that time” and stuff.

And whether or not Kyousuke is a lover-brother or just regular brother, he likes the life counseling because it allows him to be that older brother and get that connection with his sister that he didn’t have. So it was fun to see him just go “okay” at the end.

Fun series overall, and I actually would recommend this for viewing to others.

  25. lol let’s insert I’m going to America ending. Good end though and the only guy Kyouske ever talked too appears again. If there’s a complaint that I would give it would be too little of Manami. I just wish she has a chance in getting Kyouske.

  26. It was kinda funny, I wonder if the second season can come before the OVA and the OVA is being released in summer of 2011. I also can’t wait to buy the psp game for this show. It perfectly made fun of otakus and cleverly depicted them.

  27. After reading all the available summaries of the novels I have a very different view of this anime. I’m now in high hopes of a second season. Kirino is still a bitch, but I can look over that now.

  28. “Luckily, everyone overheard their entire conversation and not just the part he yelled out”
I think they DID only hear the part he yelled out about loving yaoi, and that’s why all the girls were clapping…

  29. I agree that the trip to the US came out of nowhere. Hard to believe that not even his parents would mention it to him.
Pretty good series (so far), but would it get my nomination for best comedy of the year? Certainly not. While I enjoyed watching the episodes, the situations didn’t make me laugh. The way Kirino treated her brother, they actually made me mad! 😀

My pick for best comedy of 2010 will be the same as last year: Sora no Otoshimono (Forte)

btw. is Nyan Koi second season confirmed? Apart from that announce in the last episode were there any other news? Maybe it really was only a joke. If I could choose, I’d rather see a 2nd season of Kampfer (Shizuku!).
A 2nd season of Kannagi would be great too, since that was another really hilarious series, but for that to happen, we would need the mangaka to resume her work. Any news on that?

Oh and thanks for the Kuruneko spoilers, guys. 🙁

@Divine: Wouldn’t it be possible to install a thumbs up/down system for comments? That way we could vote down spoiler postings and after a while you would only be able to see/read the particular comment if you click on it. I am really getting sick of ppl who can’t resist reading novel spoilers needing to share their unwanted knowledge with us and not properly using the spoiler space.

  30. Immediately upon seeing that this would be an anime for this season, I knew that it will be this popular, considering the niche group that are expecting something from the title.

I personally disliked the characters of this anime.

First of all, there’s the big bro, he’s such a pussy on the first 11 (gasp) episodes. I know that this is fiction but he’s just stretching out the good samaritan act a bit too much. Second, there’s Kirino, who is just a big-time bitch plain and simple. I know there’s the “tsundere” thing going on with this title, but c’mon! This is just pushing it way over the edge of bitchiness.

The “Trip to America” thing feels too much like a panic-end for the producers. I guess they were on a tight schedule – aren’t we all? Well… the manga hasn’t ended yet, and I think that they just had a last minute idea to end it in a good note. By good, I mean, in an OreImo good sort of way which isn’t that good.

  31. Oreimo “THE GOOD END” was okay for me, but i heard there will be this alterate ending with 5 episodes starting with episode 11 to 15. F*** that ! why just dont add 1 or 2 more seasons to it? Why make an awesome anime and just the sudden, you guys are finishing it so quickly !!
