My Way or the Anime – What Makes Good Sci-Fi Good
|
It’s like science, but with lying! |
This is the season of sci-fi, so it only seems appropriate that I come roaring back to the editorial scene with a dissertation on the subject. Today, let’s plumb into the very heart of the matter: what makes a story sci-fi, and what makes a story really good sci-fi.
Arata Kangatari – 03
「審判」 (Rekkoningu)
“The Reckoning”
Arata Kangatari is certainly showing no signs of panic, considering the realities of the calendar.
Hentai Ouji to Warawanai Neko. – 02
「妖精さんは怒らない」 (Yousei-san wa Okoranai)
“The Fairy Doesn’t Get Mad”
Who knew that a lack of emotion could be so cute?
Yahari Ore no Seishun Rabukome wa Machigatteiru – 03
「たまにラブコメの神様はいいことをする。」 (Tamani Rabukon no Kamisama wa Iikoto wo Suru)
“Occasionally, the RomCom Gods do something Good”
If this is the direction that Yahari is going to take from now on, you can bet that I’m overly excited to see just how intense things could possibly get in the future.
Suisei no Gargantia – 03
「無頼の女帝」 (Burai no Nyotei)
“The Villainous Empress”
Every action has a consequence.
Ore no Imouto ga Konnani Kawaii Wake ga Nai. – 03
「俺の友達が眼鏡を外すわけがない」 (Ore no Tomodachi ga Megane o Hazusu Wake ga Nai)
“My Friend Can’t Take Off Her Glasses”
One thing is now clear about almost every character in this show: you’re either an imouto, you have an imouto, or you act like an imouto. It’s the glue that links every character together, where even the most unlikely pairings can arise.
Hunter X Hunter 2011 – 76
「サイカイ×ト×リカイ」 (Saikai × to × Rikai)
“Reunion × And × Understanding”
It’s pretty rare in TV anime that we truly see history being made, but this is one of those moments when we do. For that reason, I thought it was appropriate to do one my occasional Hunter X Hunter posts for Random Curiosity.
Hyakka Ryouran Samurai Bride – 03
「愛と忠」 (Ai to Tadashi)
“Love and Kiss”
It’s true – every dog has its day. Kanetsugu finally joins Muneakira’s harem as his new Master Samurai.
*Still NSFW*
Shingeki no Kyojin – 03
「絶望の中で鈍く光る ―人類の再起①―」 (Zetsubō no Naka de Nibuku Hikaru ―Jinrui no Saiki ①―)
“Shining Dimly in the Midst of Despair ―Mankind’s Recovery (1)―”
“Prayer won’t change anything. What you need right now is the resolve to fight.” As Eren learns the hard way, the path to becoming a savior is not one for the faint of heart—a notion that paves the way for one of the best developmental episodes I’ve seen in a while.
