I wish my coworkers were like this, instead of, you know. 3D.
NEW GAME! is another entrant in the cute-girls-doing-industry-things genre, so while it’s not groundbreaking, it is cute, funny, and fun. I’ll take that any day of the week.
This post doesn’t need to be long. I lede—this is another cute-girls-doing-industry-things anime, and I enjoyed it. Before I proceed further, let’s place it on that continuum. Is this more Sore ga Seiyuu!, Shirobako, Bakuman, or something else?
Well, Soresei, if I was forced to choose from those, though that’s not quite right. It certainly has the focus on the cute and a main cast full of females, but where Soresei dripped in industry knowledge since it was written by a professional seiyuu, NEW GAME! is more along the lines of, I don’t know, maybe Mangirl, though it’s not a short. There’s some knowledge of the industry on display, this is true, but you never get the feeling you’re learning something new, nor do you get the extra layers that made Shirobako so good (up to the episode I’ve watched . . . I really ought to finish that one day #backlogwoes #cantfindthetime #canhearsamucrying).
To me it almost felt more like a job about working, like Servant x Service, only with the shipping replaced with yuri shipping. It doesn’t matter what kind of job they’re doing, it would work with anything—though making games is more fun, so why not? I do know that watching an episode about working overnight while I was working my overnight job, followed by one titled “Full-time Employment is a Loophole in the Law to Make Wages Lower,” was almost Dilbert-levels of on the nose. It’s the kind of humor that’ll make you cry.
Those were the exceptions, though. Mostly NEW GAME! is cute, light, and funny. You’ll need to be up for a CGDCT anime to enjoy it, because it’s got professional grown-ass women acting like embarrassed maidens, and several of the ostensibly college-aged adults have squeaky, childlike voices (and appearances, and personalities). It does that infantilizing thing that moe anime so love to do, but come on—look at that art. You know what you’re getting with a show like this. Steer clear if that’s not your bag, baby.
But if it is, good news! NEW GAME! is cute and funny and I enjoyed most every episode. In a season where I’m behind on damn near everything I’m not blogging (except for you, Souma . . . by which I mean Megumi <3), this was my cute & relaxing de-stressing comedy. It’s a breath of moe air to enjoy after a long day. Check it out if that’s something you might enjoy.
P.S. Hifumin best girl, Hazuki best woman, Ahagon best soldier, Kou-chan best boss, Rin best yuri boss, Mozuku most wagamama body, and Hifumin best girl. What? It bears repeating!
