Legend:

Now that every show has had a few episodes to make its case, it’s time to tell you what we’ll be blogging this season. This is Random Curiosity’s Winter 2020 blogging schedule.

As always, this is a tentative overview of our plans for the new season . . . is what we used to say, but with yonks of episodes under our belts, we’re fairly confident in our picks. Will some of them falter down the home stretch? Probably. This is what we’re going with anyway.

In staff news, it’s Iskendaris’ first full season, and we couldn’t be happier! Happiness that mostly mitigates how lazy Takaii is being. A break? A break, Takaii!? Who would do that! 😏 Special thanks go to MissSimplice, who is taking it easy this season as well, but really isn’t since she’s helping a ton of people with capping. Thanks, Miss! (And I guess Pan-chan for helping with HeroAca still. I guess *tsuuun*)

(Usual reminder: writer applications are always open, and anyone is allowed to send me a RC-style example post at stilts(at)randomc(dot)net at any time.)

In show news, we’re at 13 shows right now, though there are a couple others various people are eyeing, so one or two might get added to that list. Check back later to see if your favorite is added! (In before everyone complains that their favorite show isn’t getting blogged 😶)

That’s all I’ve got for now. Thank you all for reading, commenting, sharing, discording, and all that other stuff. Let’s enjoy another season of anime together!

  • 2/2: As promised, there’s another show for the list—Guardian Enzo will be covering Houseki-shou Richard-shi no Nazo Kantei!
  • 2/19: Psych! Guardian Enzo is making a quick swap from Team Richard to Team Iruma. He will be finishing out the season of Mairimashita! Iruma-kun!

  1. Can understand not many shows being picked up as this really isn’t a strong anime season. If anything if it wasn’t for a few decent shows currently airing I’d say it was one of the weakest in years.

As expected though you have Railgun T there, which is good. Its interesting how they’ve only covered almost 6 manga chapters in four episodes. They’ve got the pacing spot on after a lot of people complained about Index Season 3 lol.

  2. So…it’s already February and still no sign of Go-Toubun no Hanayome season 2’s first episode. Any news on that? (Production troubles, delayed to next season/this month, or the like?)

In other news, Funimation just removed Ishuzoku Reviewers from its streaming service for “not meeting standards”… Yeah, right…the third episode must have been too raunchy for them. Though with its NSFW content, I can see why there’s some reluctance in covering that anime. Personally, I knew exactly what I signed up for when I put Ishuzoku Reviewers on my “To-watch” list, but the folks at Funimation who picked up the license to stream that anime apparently didn’t? What…What the f***?! (And it wasn’t the uncensored version anyway.)

But with most subs nowadays basically being rips from CR or Funi’s subs, the only concern now is if there’s a fansub group (no need to name names) that’ll step up to the plate of subbing the show now that Funi’s dropping Ishuzoku Reviewers.

    Anyway…

    Covered shows:
Railgun T – Guess I’m as excited as you guys are to see how the new season of Railgun unfolds.
Magia Record – Despite the reveals from the original series, Magia Record still manages to hold its own mysteries waiting to be unraveled. Like Iroha’s search for her missing sister. Also, what’s Mami’s role gonna be in this story?
BOFURI – A pleasant surprise and an entertaining romp so far.

    Not covered:
RikeKoi – The comedy definitely picked up with the addition of the other members of the Ikeda lab as they get roped into Himuro and Yukimura’s experiments. Special mention goes to Kosuke Inukai (voiced by Jun Fukushima), who’s basically Kazuma if he wasn’t isekai‘d and bothered to finish high school and college. Also, Ibarada-senpai is ~<3! (P.S.: When I mentioned Himuro being "best scientist girl since [AoButa‘s] Rio Futaba and [Steins;Gate‘s] Kurisu Makise”, I do regret forgetting one more “best scientist girl” on that list: Haganai‘s Rika Shiguma.)
Nekopara – Well, if it weren’t for the main draw of “cat girls”, this would be a standard (if not forgettable) WAFF-Y “slice-of-life” anime. That said, I do appreciate the bits of cat trivia sprinkled in the show. Also, even though the anime’s “jiggle physics” slider is set to minimum, the fourth episode does have new catgirl Cacao playing with Cinnamon’s…huge tracts of land in a similar way to Chomusuke playing with Wiz’s boobs.
Isekai Quartet 2 – Glad to see the crossover comedy still solid as ever, though part of me laments Naofumi and company being reduced to side characters–at least for now. Oh, and there’s a heist, Giant Toads, more crying Aqua noises (caused by aforementioned Giant Toads), a scene of Megumin and Emilia talking to each other, plus the new OP and ED songs, too.

    1. There’s been radio silence from those involved with Go-Toubun no Hanayome on the status of Season 2, but the manga reached its end game point around December and we’ve only got a handful of chapters left. Many speculate that the studio is left in the difficult position of trying to tell a story that tries to keep its secrets completely hidden when there’s a book full of major spoilers that fans of 4/5 of the sisters might not like.

      1. [Speculation] So one cour (12 to 13 episodes) might not be enough to cover the rest of the manga’s story up to the endgame point, and one cour is all the studio has been given? (Not helped by the circulation of those “ship-sinking spoilers” from the manga.)

Either there may be negotiations for an extended season (two-cour at minimum) to air in Spring 2020 or later (read: season 2 won’t air this Winter), or–worst-case scenario–season 2 might be canceled completely. Damn. [End Speculation]

It doesn’t help that English-language anime news sites are also in the dark about it. I dunno if their Japanese counterparts have a better idea of what’s going on, or are just waiting on an official announcement from the studio/production committee.

And now for some good news: Turns out a group did fansub (the uncensored) episode 4 of Ishuzoku Reviewers, so that’s one concern put to rest. (Bless those online buccaneers and subbing groups for providing the booty–in every sense of the word. o7)

  3. Glad to see that Koisuru Asteroid didn’t make the cut: it means we won’t have to see your writers stumble over quasi-philosophical discussions on gaze or listen to lectures on how the girls are using proper methods in their activities. For those who are interested in following a quarterly talk on Koisuru Asteroid, whose author does have experience in the Earth Sciences: this will be the place to be.
