Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo – 04

「色を変える世界」 (Shoku wo Kae ru Sekai)
“A World Changing Color”

Stories are at their best when they touch upon the cornerstones of human life, on emotions and trials and tribulations its audience has faced and perhaps not yet overcome. That’s what we saw here, both in the effect of Shiina’s manga on herself and Sorata, and in the story’s message to us all.

Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai – 04

「痛恨の…闇聖典(マビノギオン)」 (Tsuukon no…Yami Seiten (Mabinogion))
“The Mabinogion…of Regrets”

There were so many good things about this episode! I could list out everything I found funny, but then we’d be here all night because I’d have to talk about out every single scene!

(Un)Serious Business – Elevator Speeches in Anime

Remember your ABCs: Always. Be. Closing. Capitalism, Ho! …or else.

In business, an elevator speech is a 30-second summary of an idea. The thought is that, if you were to find yourself in an elevator with a very important person, you should be ready to persuasively pitch your idea in 30 seconds, or else the elevator will reach its destination and the very important (and busy) person will ignore your crappy idea and leave.

What does this have to do with anime? Well, anime have elevator pitches too. Or more correctly, they have premises which can be boiled down into one sentence summaries, which is practically the same thing.

More after the jump.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo – 03

「近すぎて遠い…」 (Chikasugite Tooi…)
“So Close and Yet So Far…”

The third episode. This is the third episode, and already they’re throwing emotional fastballs like we’re sprinting down the final stretch. Except we’re not, because they still took the time for some hijinx, and they’re still only beginning to build up the characters. This show…this show has been gravely underestimated. So far, it’s great!

Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai – 03

「異端なる…双尾娘(ツインテール)」 (Itan Naru … Sou o Musume (Tsuinteru))
“The Twin Tails…of Heresy”

Through the forming of a club, a new character is introduced, Kumin-sempai is brought into the fold, and even Nibutani officially joins the group! Now if only Yuuta would stop being so tsundere about Rikka… :3

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo – 02

「絵を描いてきたの」 (E wo Egai Tekitano)
“I’ve Painted Pictures”

The key to a great comedy (to me) is deftly mixing a bit of plot progression and character development in with all the crazy antics. Amidst hilarious misunderstandings, birthday hijinx, and an art modeling session gone very, very right, we learn a little more about our characters as the story moves steadily forward.

Chuunibyou Demo Koi ga Shitai – 02

「旋律の…聖調理人(プリーステス)」 (Senritsu no … Hijiri Chourinin (Puriisutesu))
“Priestess of…the Melody”

This week introduces more characters, with an easygoing senpai and a cool beauty of an onee-san entering the fray. On top of that was some good storytelling that subtly surprised, plenty of adorable moments, and some great (delusional) action. Another delicious treat!

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo – 01

「ねこ・しろ・ましろ」 (Neko. Shiro. Mashiro)
“Cat. White. Mashiro”

Take it slow, don’t rush, establish the characters, establish the mood – that’s how I imagine the production team approached this first episode, and I must say, I am pleased. Every step of the way, from the first sight of cherry blossoms fluttering on the screen to the final roll of credits at the end, served to continually reinforce the mood of a soft, warm, and sweet romantic comedy. There just might be something special going on here.

To LOVE-Ru Darkness – 01

「Continue~コンティニュー~」 (Continue~ Konteinyu~)
“Continue~ Continue~”

So one girl is trying to create a harem for the main character while another is beset by mysterious forces trying to force her into (finally) assassinating said protagonist. Even were To LOVE-Ru not such a well-known series, I can tell you this: they would have my attention!
