Ao no Exorcist – 10
「黒猫(ケットシー)」 (Kuroneko (Ketto Shī))
“Black Cat (Cat Sith)”
The predicament with Cat Sith turning out to be a further development for Shirou didn’t come out to be too much of a big surprise.

「おもひで」 (Omoide)
“Memories”
As suspected last week, Mephisto was indeed behind everything, and I had a hunch that it was to test his powers. I didn’t forsee the test being the Esquire exam as well, but that was a nice touch.
「此に病める者あり」 (Koko ni Yameru Mono Ari)
“Now a Certain Man was Sick”
Dude. Paku’s eyes got bigger. +6 to importance. -7 for still quitting. +2 for stating unconditional love. D’awww
「友千鳥」 (Tomochidori)
“Flock of Plovers”
There were many things that stirred Kiiragi’s relatively cold heart, and the superbly complex process of friend making was one of them. An ostensibly easy job to others, but a journey for the socially inferior.
「まぼろしの料理人」 (Maboroshi no Ryōrinin)
“The Phantom Cook”
This extension of a simple mid chapter special was not only incredibly hilarious, but even managed to make some connections to pad the story.
「祟り寺の子」 (Tatari-dera no Ko)
“Child of the Cursed Temple”
Moving on from the transition into school, the actual schooling begins, with Rin snoring through every subject, inciting the rage of Suguro Ryuji (Nakai Kazuya, Zoro~), a man oddly with the same mission.
「天空の庭」 (Amahara no Niwa)
“The Amahara Garden”
If there’s any episode that didn’t scream “I’m a shounen,” it’d be this one. This was THE token episode all shounens seem to have, a self-contained story with simple values, and a good helping of “heart.” Throw in some back and forth yelling where the one that yells the loudest wins the moral argument, and you’ve got today’s Ao no Exorcist.
「兄と弟」 (Ani to Otōto)
“Brothers”
I’m surprised the sibling conflict was resolved so quickly, but I’m not entirely convinced of the reasoning they settled upon.
「虚無界の門」 (Gehena Gēto)
“Gehenna Gate”
Trauma seems to be the way to go for all great series.
「悪魔は人の心に棲む」 (Akuma wa Hito no Kokoro ni Sumu)
“Demons Live in the Human Heart”
Coming from A-1 Pictures, Ao no Exorcist is a modern representation of what I perceive to be a “classic shounen.” You know, the type that some of us are familiar with from our childhoods watching Toonami. The type that doesn’t use much of any “commercial guarantees,” but boast excellence solely on storytelling. I mean, not even a single female appeared until the sixth minute of this show! Yeah, my mind was blown too.
