Crunchyroll Expo 2017

「Crunchyroll Expo 2017」

While it may not have “convention” in its name (I’m a firm believer CrunchyCon would have been a great name), I think Crunchyroll did a pretty bang up job with its first attempt at holding its own “Expo”.

Introduction – “You have established a new Social Link”

Ohayo gozaimomo~! The name’s Choya, inspired by one of the many drinks that goes well with anime (that includes tea, coffee, and the Champagne of Otaku, Ramune). It’s an honor to be selected as one of the newest writers for Random Curiosity. I’ve been following RC since I first got into watching seasonal anime, so it’s a privilege to be a part of the team and enter the world of dagashi Street Fighter III RandomC.

My anime history begins with the standard exposure to Pokemon and Sailor Moon in the 90’s, but was dormant until I caught Tech TV’s Anime Unleashed block. Cromartie High School and Magical Shopping Arcade Abenobashi were the shows that drew me back in, with Cowboy Bebop, Samurai Champloo, and FLCL on Adult Swim help seal the deal. That’s when I headed toward the dark side of the fandom, and got too many ill-advised ideas about what cheap cosplay would impress veteran voice actors, which moe shows should I encourage the high-school anime club to play after the gory horror thriller (answer: it was K-ON!), and what would be the best way to let people know I liked Bleach. Soon, however, I started digging for shows outside the box by streaming current releases. This opened up the floodgates, and since then, I’ve always been on the lookout for the newest and spiciest options.

It’s no April Fool’s Joke. A new writer joins the fray!

April is the cruelest month1. March comes out like a lamb and the advent of my Easter holidays herald the oncoming exam season. Not unlike those fateful encounters typically seen in anime, Stilts’ recruitment post caught my eyes. Although at first I didn’t intend on applying, these encouraging words convinced me to try out:

“If you’re interested in writing for Random Curiosity, I encourage you to apply, even if you’re not 100% the ideal person I described above. Passion counts for a lot, and in the end our decision will come down to both who we think will do a good job, and who we want to work with.”

I always assumed that all this talk about signing a contract was some kind of elaborate prank. Then I signed my soul over to Stilts, which I suspect is only where my suffering begins. /人◕‿‿◕人\ Show Spoiler ▼

But really, the pleasure is all mine. Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine that I would end up becoming your newest writer. Yet here we are dear readers. The stage is set and the curtain rises. You will be stuck with me, for better or worse.

Calling All Prospective Bloggers! (2017)

Protect all the anime-chans, and give them good memories.

It’s been a while since we did one of these, hasn’t it? Well, it’s time for another go. In this the year 2017, the year of the apocalypse (probably), what could be more fun than spending your time prattling on about anime? If that doesn’t seem crazy to you, then you’re my kind of broken, and this may be the opportunity you’ve been waiting for.

Edit p4: Our new writers have been chosen. If you applied and requested feedback from me, check your email—you should have it now. If not, email me again and I’ll get back to you. Thanks for your time!

The Best of Anime 2016

Now that 2016 is officially over, it’s time for our yearly foray into annoying everyone with our questionable opinions, the Best of Anime 2016 post! As with last year, this post is a collaboration between the writers who watched the most series this year, me (Zephyr) and Samu. Through hiatuses and other real-life obligations, we both still managed to watch approximately 100 series this year, making us somewhat informed about whatever we’re wrong about.

Disclaimer: As always, disclaimers abound. Please keep in mind that “best” is subjective. What’s best for us isn’t necessarily best for you, and that’s perfectly fine. This list shouldn’t be taken as some kind of inviolable truth, but rather the opinions of two guys who had too much time on their hands and spent it conjuring up a list of picks based on all the anime they watched. Naturally, our choices will be influenced by our own tastes, experiences, and personal impressions, and ultimately these are just recommendations of series we feel most people will enjoy, nothing more. Before you go bashing one of our choices, please make sure you’ve at least given the series a chance so you may know where we’re coming from. Aside from that, we ask that you respect our opinions and the opinions of others in the comments, just like we respect yours. Thank you.

Disclaimer #2: The choices in this post are not reflective of the opinions of all Random Curiosity writers. They are solely the opinions of myself (Zephyr) and Samu, save for where otherwise noted. Thank you for your understanding.
