Spring 2016 Preview!

The heat of summer has mercifully given way to autumn here in the southern hemisphere, but in animeland, i.e. the only place that matters, it’s spring, which means another big season of anime is coming. We have sequels targeted at those seeking a blast from the past, including more Sailor Moon Crystal to continue an old franchise, and more Concrete Revolutio to deconstruct them all. Watching anime just for the robots? Both Gundam and Macross have an iteration this season. Of course, there are adaptations across the genres for your perusal: the popular manga Boku no Hero Academia brings us shounen action, the popular videogame series Gyakuten Saiban brings legal adventure, and Sakamoto of the titular Sakamoto Desu ga? is plain popular, and also hilarious. But perhaps most notable are the original series that are harder to pigeonhole, like the supernatural bus trip of Mayoiga or Kuromukuro’s story of a samurai in a school on a dam, both to counterpoint the uncannily familiar Koutetsujou no Kabaneri. Why just listen to me list shows, though? Our crack team of animethusiasts are on hand to be your Geiger counter for the entire season of anime. This is Random Curiosity’s Spring 2016 Preview.

The Best of Anime 2015

Now that 2015 is officially over, it’s time for our yearly pitchfork skewering foray into annoying everyone with our questionable opinions, the Best of Anime 2015 post! As with last year, the post will be a collaboration between the two writers who watched the most series this year (and also had the most time on their hands). Relative newcomer Samu takes the place of Stilts, who had a little too much to drink this time around. The total series watched list for both writers ended up at about 100 this year, and while we won’t guarantee total objectivity (like such a thing exists), we’re generally well-informed about whatever we’re wrong about.

More after the jump.

Disclaimer: As always, disclaimers abound. Please keep in mind that “best” is subjective. What’s best for us isn’t necessarily best for you, and that’s perfectly fine. This list shouldn’t be taken as some kind of inviolable truth, but rather the opinions of two guys who had too much time on their hands and spent it conjuring up a list of picks based on all the anime they watched. Think of them more as a recommendations influenced by our own tastes, experiences, and personal impressions. Before you go bashing one of our choices, please make sure you’ve at least seen it and know where we’re coming from. Finally, all we ask is that you respect our opinions and the opinions of others in the comments, just like we respect yours. Thank you.

Disclaimer #2: The choices in this post are not reflective of the opinions of all Random Curiosity writers. They are solely the opinions of myself (Zephyr) and Samu, save for where otherwise noted.

Winter 2016 Preview!

Brace yourselves… winter is coming. And like tired-ass memes from creatively bankrupt bloggers, that means it’s time for another season preview. The world of sequels is still going strong, with a continuation of the wonderful medieval romance Akagami no Shirayukihime 2nd Season, the final installment of the new Durararas in Durarara!!x2 Ketsu, and a return of the ridiculous[ly awesome] octopus-flavored assassination story in Ansatsu Kyoushitsu 2nd Season. Not to be outdone, there are exciting new adaptations as well, such as the multiple award-winning josei drama Shouwa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, the gritty sci-fi of Dimension W, and the latest cute-boys-doing-sports-things otome game adaptation in Prince of Stride Alternative. As for originals—there are a lot of originals. I don’t even know where to start as there are so many of them, but some to look out for are studio Sanzigen’s CGI action series Bubuki Buranki, the powersuit cop action of Active Raid: Kidou Kyoushuushitsu Dai Hakkei, and what might be a reprise of your favorite childhood game in Phantasy Star Online 2 The Animation. All in all, there’s a wide range to look forward to for anime fans of all types. Join us once again as we tell you which ones we think will be good—this is Random Curiosity’s Winter 2016 Preview.

Monthly Impressions – February 2015

February always feels like such a short month, even though it’s only missing a few days. There’s Valentine’s Day, Chinese New Year and despite how some people say that this winter season isn’t the best, there’s still a handful (or more) shows that interest our staff. That’s enough to keep us busy so we’re sorry for the delayed post but without further ado… Enjoy! Keep in mind that even though we’re not watching or posting about a particular series, you are free to talk about it in the comments. You never know, it might entice us to pick it up as well!

Monthly Impressions – January 2015

We’re already one month in the new year! I can’t believe how quickly time flies because this winter season has completely escaped me. Crazy! I don’t know about everyone else, but I live up in the North and it’s incredibly cold here so I just want to hibernate all day all the time. Thus, I haven’t been watching too many series this season but the ones I have picked up are definitely some great conversation pieces. Hopefully everyone has found something this winter as well and if there’s an anime that we haven’t talked about already, feel free to mention it in the comments. Maybe it’ll spark others to give it a try too.

The Best of Anime 2014

Now that 2014 is officially over, it’s time for our yearly rage fest foray into annoying everyone with our questionable opinions, the Best of Anime 2014 post! As with last year this post is a collaboration between the writers who watched the most series this year (and who didn’t say “Not it!” quickly enough), me (Zephyr) and Stilts. We each watched upwards of a 100 series this year, and while we we won’t guarantee total objectivity (like such a thing exists), we’re generally well-informed about whatever we’re wrong about.

More after the jump.
