Best of Anime 2022

With 2022 officially over, now comes the moment that many of you have been waiting for. It’s time for our annual foray into annoying everyone with our questionable opinions, the Best of Anime 2022 post! Continuing in 2021’s wake this will be a collaboration between writers. That would be me (Pancakes), Choya, FJ Freeman, Princess Usagi, and Miss Simplice. We didn’t quite manage all the shows this year (or complete this on time…), but we heavily focused on watching entries that made a serious clamour within the anime community. This is a third time for us, and we’ll inevitably get things wrong. So please feel free to be brutally honest while giving us constructive feedback. And if we picked something you disagree with don’t hesitate to voice your opinion – best of posts are always subjective!

Continuing from 2021, there are numerous categories in the following areas: Production, Miscellaneous, Genre, and Notable Others. Due to lack of series candidates, and/or the belief that we may not have watched enough shows to make an informed decision about specific genres, some categories present in previous years were ommitted. Without further ado, let’s get started!

Random Curiosity’s OP, ED, and OST Favourites!

Music makes the world go round

New season, new anime – and also new RC Patreon commissions! That’s right, we’re back at it, this time for our amazing subscriber Nicc, and the topic of choice is our favourite anime OPs, EDs, and OSTs. Unlike our earlier top three anime Patreon post this one wound up be being hard for a few of us, because hey, nothing says challenging like picking music. Very challenging indeed. Also as a reminder, if you’d like to get us writing about something like this, consider becoming a Random Curiosity Patreon supporter!

Fall 2022 Preview

Ahh autumn, truly the season of change. As hot snaps and long summer days give way to changing leaves, colder weather, and the always ubiquitous combo of Uggs and pumpkin spice lattes (god help us all) so to do things change in anime. Change for the ridiculously good. This fall is probably the first overloaded and hype-worthy season in a long time, as not only are we getting major heavy hitting sequel heaven with the likes of Spy x Family, Boku no Hero Academia, Golden Kamuy, and BLEACH, but also receiving some hotly anticipated adaptations and originals in Chainsaw Man, Mobile Suit Gundam Suisei no Majo, Urusei Yatsura, and Legend of Mana. Those names alone not tickling the fancy? Then try on Hamefura successor Akuyaku Reijou, comedic isekai Kage no Jitsuryoku ni Naritakute, Chinese historical Koukyuu no Karasu, and foreign-influenced romcom Renai Flops for size. And hey, if you still have time after all that anime (watch out for stomach aches) don’t forget about round two of the adorably annoying Uzaki-chan wa Asobitai, the man as isekai’d sword in Tensei Shitara Ken Deshita, the 90s maid apocalypse in Akiba Maid Sensou, and latest season in the never boring Mob Psycho 100.

The world may be a dark and dreary place right now, but anime this season is certainly here in spades to help us over the hump and keep us enjoying life. This is Random Curiosity’s Fall 2022 Preview!

Winter 2022 Preview

Alas, it is winter (depending on where you live) with bone-chilling winds blowing their way through the bare, dreary trees. Like the winter trees, this anime season is certainly barer than the Fall season. But never fear- there are enough series to brighten the long, dark days and somber landscapes! Just as there are children waiting all year with bated breath to open their holiday gifts, we anime fans have been waiting eagerly for some of the big sequels airing this season – Shingeki no Kyojin, Vanitas no Karte, and JoJo no Kimyou na Bouken Part 6: Stone Ocean (if that second half drops this season of course!). There’s nothing like warming up in the frosty outdoors through some blood-pumping exercise, and for fans of baseball and Danganronpa, the extreme baseball themed series Tribe Nine by Danganronpa’s creator is likely to be of interest.

In the deep of winter, there is nothing cozier than curling up with a cup of tea and a good history book. Or you can skip the books entirely and go for an alternate (and not entirely historically verifiable) adaption of history with the tragedy of Richard the Third in Baraou no Souretsu. Sabiuki Bisco offers a fun(gal) take on post-apocalyptic survival with humanity’s last hope hinging on the battle between good and evil mushrooms. Meanwhile, Orient poses an intriguing question of what happens when the roles of good guys and bad guys become reversed in society. To get in on some magic action fighting against youkai, check out Saiyuuki Reload: Zeroin, an alternate story in the Saiyuuki Reload universe. And, probably most importantly for this time of year, remember love comes in all shapes and sizes, with a lid for every pot – which seems to be the case for the gruesomely romantic pursuit between two killers in Koroshi Ai, the costuming enthusiasts in Sono Doll wa Koi wo Suru, and cutesy BL contender Sasaki to Miyano.
