There might be plenty of new changes with the latest season, from the staff to the storyline, but Hayate no Gotoku! Can’t Take My Eyes Off You does an admirable job of living up to the spirit of the franchise while giving the show a surprising air of freshness.

It’s been a while since the 2nd season of Hayate no Gotoku ended, and I’ve been looking forward to the movie which premiered back in August of last year. The series has always been among my favorite harem comedies, so I watched this with high expectations, and all in all it provided what I was looking for.

Spoiler Warning: if you haven’t watched the movie yet and don’t want to know what happens, stay away from this post for now.

It’s not over until we get a kiss! Oh crap…

Celestial Being, armed military intervention, GN particles, and Aeolia Schenberg. That’s enough references to make any Gundam 00 fan chuckle under his/her breath. Add in some Lelouch/Zero poses with mention of the United States of Japan and you have CODE GEASS fans smirking as well.

Sakuya turns 15 years old but the episode focused on practically everyone else but her.

Sakuya’s birthday and the “Ferris wheel” scene. Neither were quite what I was expecting, but it seems like we’re finally at the climax of the series. There’s no doubt about it now: episode 25 will be the finale of this second season.

Hayate looks on attentively as Ayumu reveals her sexy underwear. Don’t blink!

I’m not entirely sure when it happened, but sometime over the course of this season my expectations of this series shifted far off the quirky comedy that it’s known for.

Tama may have looked cuter when he was a cub, but he’s still no kitten.

Hmm, an entire episode dedicated to Tama. Not exactly what I was looking forward to when this second series appears to be only 26 episodes, so here’s to hoping that the last five episodes will involve more of Hayate’s “girl problems”.

Haruko pulls off a sexier maid than Maria. No wonder the latter got sidelined this episode.

When I can’t recall the seiyuu of a character, it usually means they’ve fallen far off my radar. This was the case with Harukaze Chiharu a.k.a. “Haruko”, who’s played Fujimura Ayumi (Shimizu Raimei in Nabari no Ou). Oddly, Ayumi is a seiyuu I normally take notice to, so learning that she plays the student council secretary who secretly works as a maid for Sakuya suddenly put Haruko in a whole new light. See above.

Hayate goes for the cheap “Oops, I tripped into your boobs” routine on Maria. Well executed debt-ridden butler!

I had to deviate from starting my posts with the usual Hina screenshot this week in light of some “Hayate’s face in Maria’s chest” action.

That is one happy girl. I figured Hayate would give her cookies too by the end of the episode. It’s almost as if I write this stuff…

New opening and ending themes, White Day follow-up to the Valentine’s Day episode, and lots of Hina/Ayumu screentime — this week was full of all sorts of awesomeness.

Some sweet delicious flat chest. I personally prefer “curvier” girls, but I’d make an exception for Hina because she’s a cutie pie. <3

While I don’t consciously try to start all my posts with a screenshot of Hina, it just sort of happens every time. Anyway, I learned a lot this episode.

Hina acting all cool and trying to do the “right thing”. Damn, it’s still hot.

So we still didn’t get a “hot spring” episode, unless you count the scenes they already showed in the preview last time. To make matters worse, that’s probably all we’re getting too.

Maria, the runner up in the popularity contest, goes on the offense and calls out Hinagiku’s small breasts! Oh now it’s on!

I feel a bit trolled here. Where’s my hot spring episode?

Hina wins the 2nd season popularity contest by an absolute landslide. Would we have it any other way?

Seriously now, was there really any contest here?
