「日常3」 (Nichijou 3)
“My Ordinary Life 3”

I’m not sure why, but I reserve a small spot in my top seiyuu list for Shiraishi Minoru. Ever since his role in Lucky Star where he ended up being at the receiving end of just about every bad joke in the book, I’ve been looking forward to watching him become that great seiyuu he wanted to be — and look, he’s playing the part of a near important main character. While I have no idea just how important the role of Sakamoto-san will be, I can’t wait to see how a serious character will liven things up with our two airheads. If episode 00 was any indication of what’s to come, I can’t wait to watch a battle between Hakase and Sakamoto (I’m sure Hakase is going to win).

While there could have been more Mio this episode, I was dying after I watched Yuuko try to outsmart the world. For one, I never thought that Yuuko would be able to be so funny on her own. Starting with her fake apologizes to Mai for devouring her entire bento to her general irresponsibility, it’s pretty amazing watching how far Yuuko will go to keep up her “image”. Just like a certain friend of mine, it’s pretty funny to watch someone who’s out of the loop of things try to fix it only to end up worse then where they started.

After a whole episode of Yuuko being dumber than usual, it was a nice treat to watch her completely lose face during that arm wrestling match. Besides watching Mai completely destroy Yuuko (even when Yuuko was cheating!), the fact that Yuuko just wouldn’t give it up had me cracking up. Starting off acting a bit arrogant and ending with tears of shame, it was nearly too much to watch her try to make up a different excuse for each and every loss.

As episode three came to a close, I must say that this one felt the least funny. But as I sat here while writing this post, I figured that I watch Nichijou for that constant barrage of random scenes rather than meaningful character and story interaction. Who doesn’t love a whole ton of random presented in a good-looking package? All I know is that after not sleeping for two days I know that I forced myself to stay awake just because I wanted to watch more and more.

  1. Mai is God spread the word!
Overall a pretty hilarious episode but it felt a bit weak compared to the 2 previous episodes… but meh it was still good enough to brighten up my weekend.

  2. Constant randomness gets old quickly- which is why I’m worried that I might tire of this show sooner or later and drop it- it may be one of those types that’s best to marathon at the end of the season just so everything’s fresh all at once…

  3. Sakamoto-san…..oh how you shattered the dreams of those who wished they could hear there pets talk, only to be welcomed by the voice of an old man. I just placed myself in Hakase and Nano’s position and could just see my hopes and dreams of a pet that had a cute speaking voice just break into little bitty pieces.

  4. This ep might not be hotblooded as the earlier eps but majority of it still cracked me up besides being slower.
Quickly summarizing majority of this ep…

    Trolling101 with instructor Mai.
I seriously can’t get the idea out of my head with Prince Baka(Level-E) vs. QB(Madoka) vs. Mai(Nichijou) in a triple threat match duking it out maximum trolling style. Whoever rages losses.

Mai was on a role here with her trolling prowess especially making Yuuko confess what she did. I lol’d when she said that the 2nd part was news to her.

Next best troll she pulled off was the manga part. I just lost it when Masao shrieked after his dad said he’d been laid off from work. Speaking of which I wonder who voiced Masao and the tiger. I demand more of it lol.
And also someone mentioned a cover of Type 5(IIRC) at the end. Pretty neat.

My favorite highlight for this ep. Just thinking the idea of Mai being cold as hell is just hilarious. I mean she just put her friend to shame and still demanded those promised juice boxes. Overall Yuuko’s VA was entertaining at this part.

      1. Well if Yuuko just stole her brocolli and cauliflower, then you would be right, but stealing everything except the beans and taking (after breaking) her stuff? Mai has every right to screw Yuuko.

The only thing that was “bad Mai” was the dog/clay shoot. Given the crazy universe, i’m not too sure it can be ruled out its actually an acceptable sport

  5. What can i say, Yuuko really made that bed she had to lie on.

Raising your hand halfway so its blocked by the front person’s head ye you can’t be faulted for not raising your hand? Not a bad idea. Making excuses for each arm wrestling loss, well that classic 中二病 :p

  6. Masao!!!! What’s in store for you next?! On that note.. Mai is evil~
I can’t wait for more Sakamoto scenes. I loved how he acted after Hakase put the bandana on him. That made me lol. Gotta treat cats right!

  7. Personally I found episode 1 to be the least entertaining out of all the ones so far. Was almost a deal breaker for me because of the unbalanced randomn to funny ratio but then episode 2 delivered. Ep 3 was nice but not as good as 2 and so far the characters haven’t done much to stand out among the other SoL series out there.

  8. Tat afro…I knew SOMETHING was gonna come outta it XDD
As usual, the hit-or-miss jokes got me pretty much on the spot even when this episode was fairly weak compared to 1&2.
Mai and her trollness wins OwOb

  9. I really didn’t understand it, and I still don’t, but the strawman was just hilarious for unknown reasons (possibly b/c the principal began to over-react). Anyone care to explain?

  10. I’m doing that right now too. (Staying up.) There are so many shows airing that are worth watching. You go to sleep, there’s a handful of new episodes waiting for you. Turn your head for a second and another one pops up. It’s so hard to keep up! 😀

  11. I thought this was the best episode so far. It’s true when some here once wrote that Nichijou makes us realize how much effort we put into daily things xD Lol The part about Yuuko raising her hand and the part where she keeps on making excuses reminded me of myself trying the same stuff before 😛

Loved Mai’s manga strip. Laughed so hard at his voice, specially when he’s surprised xD

  12. While still funny, I do agree with Takaii that this episode was pale compared to the previous two.

    Highlights this week include:

Yuuko being an utterly sore loser, I never knew a person stubbornly refusing to admit defeat despite all the odds against her can be so funny.

The pretty much nonsensical Principal and the School Dean’s natto-filled curse straw
, still, it was so WTF that I ended up laughing.

Mai’s random manga, so random even Yuuko is giving a WTF expression. lol

There’s also the tengu pun sketch, which may be a bit lost on those not too proficient in Japanese.

The idiom “tengu ni natta” (becoming a tengu) means “stop pushing your luck/don’t get too cocky”, which was exactly what the tengu did when trying to push his luck in taking advantage of the landlady’s kindness and got scolded.

  13. I’m surprised people think this is the weakest episode of the three that have aired. I understand there was nothing as hot-blooded as the first two episodes, but this one got the most laughs from me. It was off the wall in a way I could relate to, and Sakamoto finally kicking in made it great.

  14. I got around to watching this, all the current episodes today.Ep 4 comes out today too I think.

The funniest parts of this episode, was the Metal Gear Solid Cat, the Janken match (lol you failed ms.robot), and how Mai jumped rope.
