The Daily Dose

  • If you’ve been wondering why I haven’t written one of these posts in about three weeks, it’s because I’ve been in the middle of a move and haven’t had much time to do anything extra over the shows I’m blogging regularly. Things haven’t quite settled down yet, so my schedule’s still in a bit of a flux, but I didn’t want to put this off any further since there’s so many new series announcements, PVs, etc piling up. Unfortunately all this also means that I won’t have time to continue keeping up with Tetsuwan Birdy like I wanted to, so I had to drop that.

  • The anime adaptation for the shoujo manga Skip Beat! – coming this October – will feature Inoue Marina as Kyoko and Miyano Mamoru as Shou.

    Server Move Complete

  • If you’re reading this, then the DNS changes have propagated and you’re now seeing Random Curiosity on its new server.
  • We had a weird hiccup where certain pieces of Javascript were causing people using Internet Explorer to be unable to see the site, but I’ve just fixed that. If you see any other problems, leave a comment here or send me an email.
  • Many thanks to my friends at Maximum 7 for their help serving images for the past few weeks, to Mentar for helping us get the new server, and to community admin Maestro for getting everything up and going.
  • Random Musings – Meta-tastic

Just a few meta items to mention before I go to bed:

  • Thanks to everyone who offered a temporary place to put images. I think we’re now set until we move to the new server.
  • Divine just returned home from Japan yesterday, so he’s still in catch-up mode for several of his shows, plus whatever new ones he’s thinking of picking up.
  • For this summer season in particular, I think it’s worth saying that just because a first episode isn’t blogged right away doesn’t mean that it’s not being considered. I’ll use World Destruction as an example. I thought the first episode was okay, did well with its strong voice cast, and had some decent story potential, but I’m not exactly leaping to blog it, especially since I’m already following SOUL EATER on Mondays and two shows on Sundays. I’d reconsider though if none of the other series airing this week that I’m interested in (Koihime Musou, Nogizaka Haruka no Himitsu, or even the new j-drama Yasuko to Kenji) turn out to be any more compelling than World Destruction, and in that case, I’d tweak my schedule a bit so that I can fit World Destruction in. One of the problems this season (and it’s more of an issue for Divine than it is for me) is that most of the shows we’re interested in watching are stacked on a few days of the week – Wednesdays and Thursdays for example – whereas days like Tuesdays and Saturdays are unusually light. That’s why it’ll probably take a little longer than usual for us to settle into a normal blogging schedule.
  • Also, I haven’t forgotten about Daily Doses. They will return as soon as things settle down and I figure out what I want to follow. And a quick thanks to all the people who emailed me about the new ef series.

    Recent Downtime Update

  • If you’ve noticed a lot of downtime recently, it’s because the Random Curiosity server is getting hammered with all the traffic the new season is generating. Unfortunately, our only option is to upgrade the server, and that’ll take at least a week, if not two. For the time being, I’ve taken some measures (like getting rid of the polls) that will hopefully relieve at least some of the strain until we can make the move. If you have a fast server I can offload some images onto temporarily, please email me ASAP. Otherwise, keep your fingers crossed…
  • On that note, I should mention that the AnimeBlogger Donation Drive is still going, and they’re still about $400 short of their original goal of $1600. Money for that doesn’t help Random Curiosity’s server costs directly (this site is barely supported by ads), but it does benefit the rest of the AnimeBlogger community and helps our network admin Maestro pay for those servers.
  • Random Musings – Zettai Kareshi Edition

If you are watching or are planning on watching the J-drama Zettai Kareshi, be sure to bring a big box of tissues for the finale. In fact, even though I knew pretty much exactly what was going to happen in the end thanks to having read the manga, I still cried when I watched it. It’s a testament to how much emotion was in the finale and how much you connect with the characters after having followed their stories for so long (which I realize you can say for a lot of series, but it was especially powerful in this instance).

For those of you who aren’t familiar with Zettai Kareshi, it’s about a girl who gets a robot as her ideal boyfriend, and the problems and love triangle that this leads to. As I noted when I first wrote about it a few weeks ago, the series quite a lot of fun to watch. It can get a bit cheesy at times – which is hard to avoid in these kinds of drama series – but those moments were rare, and I thought they did a great job pacing the story with plot twists and cliffhangers. In retrospect, I wish I had started watching this earlier and perhaps made an attempt to blog it. Come to think of it, I really should pay more attention to drama series based on shoujo manga titles in general – I haven’t had a great record with anime adaptations, but I usually like the drama versions.

In any case, I’m glad I took the time to watch this series because, as you can see, I ended up loving it. I’d highly recommend it for anyone who enjoys a good light-hearted romance. Now I’m going to go back to listening to the theme song on repeat…

A Quick Note on Comments and the Spam Filter

There have been several people recently who have been caught by the spam filter for spamming even though they weren’t doing so. If this happens to you, then the spam filter might also retroactively remove all of your past comments, and at first glance that can look like that there’s someone actively moderating or censoring the comments. There is not.

The spam filter is programmed to catch bots, and so if you post too fast after loading a page or too frequently within a small time-frame, it’ll think you’re a bot and will flag you. If you see that your comment has been marked for moderation, or if you get a message saying that you’ve been caught by the spam filter, don’t fret and try to repost it right away – that’ll just get all of your messages deleted automatically. The best way to rectify any comment problems is to email me with your username and email, and I’ll correct it immediately. Incidentally, I don’t plan on changing the spam filter anytime soon because it succeeds at catching 99.9% of the real spam, and there’s a ton of that.

On Vacation – To the Land of the Rising Sun

While hearing about my vacation plans is probably not the most exciting thing, my blogging will be affected; therefore, this can be considered as a somewhat official notice of that. For the first time ever, I’ll be going overseas and on a real vacation (i.e. paid vacation days). Evidently, this will also be my first time in Japan, but I’ll be there for a month, staying at an apartment I rented in Ikebukuro, so hopefully that’ll be enough time for the Japanese lifestyle to soak in. I’ll have Internet access at the apartment, but I’ll only have my relatively old and underpowered 10.6″ Fujitsu ultra-portable notebook along with me. While this little thing has served me well in university, blogging will be somewhat difficult due to its inability to playback HD videos smoothly (…in addition to the time commitment of course). Regardless, I don’t want to put all seven shows I’m covering on a complete hiatus, as the backlog when I return would be somewhat daunting.

My tentative plan right now is to continue covering the shows that I currently am, but in a fairly trimmed down manner. These “lite” posts will probably be restricted to screenshots and impressions alone, so my apologies to those of you who come here for the summaries. (Writing detailed summaries is always the most time-consuming task for me.) At the very least, I want to have a “placeholder entry” with just screenshots for completeness sake (indicating that I have watched the episode), which would also allow for any discussion amongst you, the readers. The regularity that my posts appear will probably be affected as well, given how I’ll be on Tokyo time and out and about most of the time. Again, this is merely a tentative plan, but I’ll try to adhere to it the best I can.

I’m leaving in the middle of next week, but some of my posts this week may also be affected while I prepare for my trip. As mentioned above, I won’t be back until a month later (~July 6th), but hopefully by then, I’ll have some interesting stories that I can use for Random Musings.

Note: This will affect (Mon) Wagaya no Oinari-sama., Nabari no Ou, Special A, (Thurs) Allison & Lillia, kurenai, To LOVE-Ru, and (Sat) Kanokon, but Omni’s coverage will continue as normal.

Tidbit: The image above is taken from the official site of the Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flowers) movie, which premieres on June 28th in Japan. Seeing as how I recently finished the drama and thoroughly enjoyed it, I just might check it out while I’m there. I was asked, “Do you really want to be in a theater surrounded by bunch of screaming Japanese fan girls?”, but the person quickly added, “Oh wait, that might not be such a bad thing.” I’ll let you guess who said that. =)

Random Musings – The Hot Sheets

  • It’s with great reluctance that I’ve had to make the decision to drop Kyouran Kazoku Nikki. It’s absolutely nothing against the series – which I’ve enjoyed quite a bit – but rather due to my new job keeping me from being able to spare the time. Unfortunately, I had to cut something, and this was it.
  • I put up the current Kanokon poll because of the news yesterday that streaming site GyaO will no longer be showing Kanokon due to ethical regulations. You’d think that they’d have gotten a clue after the hardcore spanking in episode three, but maybe it was the practically exposed breasts in episode seven that led to this. Or perhaps whatever is in the hot springs for episode eight is even more outrageous than anything else so far. Either way, some are speculating that this has to do with Kanokon being #1 a couple of weeks ago on GyaO’s rankings for both the elementary school boys and girls demographics.
  • In CODE GEASS news, episode nine has reportedly been delayed a week. Episode eight will still air this weekend, but episode nine will NOT be airing on June 1st as it had originally been scheduled. Instead there will be some sort of emergency filler show. I haven’t found an official reason, but others have speculated that it’s because of the Chinese earthquake tragedy, and that’d make sense since episode nine involves the Chinese Federation.
  • Finally, and perhaps the most important item in this post: I am currently seeking an editorialist for Random Curiosity. Ideally, such a person would be able to present opinion on the news topic of the day (such as the Kanokon and Geass items mentioned above) or on whatever other current topics they think are relevant to the anime community/industry/etc. This does not require any Japanese language ability, but it does require good English and good writing ability. If you’re interested, please send me an email and include two sample writings, the first addressing the question of “Should anime adaptations strictly follow the manga?” and, the other is any topic of your choice. You could talk about ankles for all I care – the more creative the better, as long as there’s some relation to anime/manga/culture.

    Ugh…

You ever get completely out of your normal sleep cycle because you’ve spent one too many nights up late working? That’s where I’m at right now after having spent the past 3 straight days working on a paper. Ugh. In any case, it’s done and final exams are finally over, so I hopefully I can get quickly caught back up with all the stuff here that I’m behind on (and also return to my normal sleep cycle). On a side note, I found the above image on Danbooru and thought it was way too cute not to include here since I was already talking about sleep.
